Two Philadelphia Athletics players, Alvin Gipe on the left and Topsy Harvel on the right, stand side by side in this portrait, which the record dates to about 1911. That was a strong period for the American League club, which was under manager Connie Mack and won the World Series that fall. The picture is a glass negative from the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that sold images to newspapers, so the sitter identifications come from the agency's caption cards. The Society for American Baseball Research's Pictorial History Committee later checked the title and date in 2006.
