Few pitchers of the 1910s were as well known as Charles "Chief" Bender, the Ojibwe right-hander shown here, who anchored the Philadelphia Athletics' rotation for most of that decade. The original caption identified the subject only as an unidentified player, possibly of the Boston Red Sox, but a 2006 review by the Society for American Baseball Research's Pictorial History Committee assigned the Bender identification and the 1913 date. The Bain News Service, the photo agency that produced this glass negative, supplied newspapers with pictures like this one, so the portrait reflects how ballplayers were photographed for mass readers around that time.
