Few pitchers from the 1912 Philadelphia Athletics are as little documented as Roger Salmon, and this glass negative is one of the few visual records of him. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that sold pictures to newspapers, made the image, and its caption card identifies him simply as "Salmon, Phila A's." The Athletics, managed by Connie Mack, were one of the strongest clubs in the early American League, and newspaper portraits like this one helped readers put faces to the team's roster. The 1912 date comes from later research by the Society for American Baseball Research, not from the negative itself.
