Harry Davis is shown in uniform as a player for the Philadelphia Athletics of the American League, a detail that places him on one of the strongest teams of the early 1910s. Davis was known for his power at the plate and was one of the league's leading home run hitters in the years before the dead-ball era ended. The Athletics were a central part of Philadelphia's sporting life during this period, and the team won the World Series in 1911, the year this photograph is dated to. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs that captures the everyday look of early twentieth-century baseball.
