Kitty Bransfield was a first baseman who spent most of his career with the Philadelphia Phillies, and this glass negative captures him as a player of the National League in the early 1910s. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs assembled by the Bain News Service in New York, which supplied pictures of sports, politics and everyday life to newspapers across the country. Bain's photographers often labeled their negatives with a player's name and team, and the baseball pictures from this period give a useful record of the uniforms, equipment and ballpark routines of the time. The date of about 1910 rests on later research by the Society for American Baseball Research rather than on a date written on the plate itself.
