The subject here is the second battleship to carry the name Maine, shown under construction at the William Cramp & Sons shipyard in Philadelphia. The original Maine, a cruiser built at the same yard, exploded and sank in Havana harbor in February 1898, and its loss helped push the United States into the Spanish-American War. This color halftone reproduces a painting by Fred Pansing and appeared as a supplement to the Marine Review, a Cleveland trade journal covering shipbuilding and maritime affairs, in February 1900. Its value lies in showing a shipyard at work on a vessel meant to replace one the nation had mourned.
