The Schuylkill Water Works at Fairmount, on the river's east bank, pumped drinking water to Philadelphia and was among the earliest large municipal waterworks in the United States. This engraving reproduces a drawing by the British topographer W.H. Bartlett, whose views of American towns and landscapes were widely circulated in illustrated books of the 1830s and 1840s. Steel engraving, the method used here by the engraver Dick, could capture fine detail and tonal range, so the print shows the pumping house, reservoirs, and river setting with precision. The record gives no publication date.
