Looking down the Schuylkill from Fairmount gives this view its particular angle: the high ground of the Fairmount waterworks, where the river bends past the city's northwest edge. Fairmount was one of the earliest municipal water systems in the United States, built in the early 1800s to pump Schuylkill water into Philadelphia, and its reservoirs and pump house made the hill a well-known vantage point for visitors. Printed views like this one were popular in the 19th century, when engravers and lithographers sold scenes of American cities to a public eager to see the new industrial landscape. The record lists no date and only the name Hill from the shelflist card, so the exact maker and year remain unconfirmed.
