This view shows the Second Bank of the United States on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, a building that stands out for its Greek Revival design. Architect William Strickland completed it between 1818 and 1824, and its front portico of tall Doric columns drew on ancient Greek temple architecture, a style that came to define American public buildings in the early 1800s. The bank's charter lapsed in 1836, and the building later served as a federal custom house. Its colonnade remains one of the clearest examples of how the young republic borrowed classical forms to express its ideals.
