Unlike the other views on this board, this one shows the Second Bank of the United States on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia. Architect William Strickland designed the building in the Greek Revival style, and its front portico of Doric columns drew on classical Greek temples, a bold choice for an American financial institution in the 1820s. The bank was chartered in 1816 and was a central force in the young nation's finances until its federal charter expired in 1836. The building later served as a federal customs house, and its columned facade became one of the most recognized examples of Greek Revival architecture in the country.
