Few buildings in Philadelphia expressed the young nation's ambitions as boldly as the Second Bank of the United States, and this roof plan dates from 1818, when the project was taking shape. William Strickland designed the building in the Greek Revival style, with a colonnade of Doric columns inspired by the Parthenon, and its front influenced bank architecture well beyond Philadelphia. Congress chartered the bank in 1816 to stabilize the national currency, and its headquarters on Chestnut Street was meant to look as permanent as the institution itself. The roof plan shows how the building's massive walls and hidden framing were arranged above the public spaces below.
