Seen from a height that lets the whole city spread out at once, this hand-colored lithograph turns Philadelphia into a panorama of streets, rooftops, and the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers. Currier & Ives, the New York firm best known for its sporting, political, and domestic prints, issued it in 1875, a year before the Centennial Exhibition drew crowds to the city. Bird's-eye views like this were popular in the 1870s and 1880s because they offered viewers a map-like overview of a growing city, and the hand coloring gives the buildings and open spaces a lively, individual look worth examining up close.
