Looking down over Philadelphia from an elevated vantage point, this view also sweeps across the Centennial grounds in Fairmount Park, which were being readied for the 1876 Centennial Exhibition. That world's fair marked a century since the Declaration of Independence and drew roughly ten million visitors. Bird's-eye panoramas like this one were a popular format in the 1870s, letting viewers take in a whole city and its fairgrounds at once. The associated name Bachmann comes from an unverified shelflist card, so treat the attribution as tentative.
