Philadelphia appears here from above, in a bird's-eye lithograph that lets the eye travel across the whole city at once. Currier & Ives, the New York firm better known for its sporting and farm scenes, issued the print in 1875, the year before the Centennial Exhibition drew crowds to Fairmount Park. Bird's-eye views were popular after the Civil War because they packed a city's streets, rivers and church spires into one sheet, and hand coloring gave each impression its own tints.
