Pennsylvania Hospital, on Pine Street, appears here as it looked in 1800, nearly half a century after its founding. Benjamin Franklin and Dr. Thomas Bond established it in 1751, and it was among the earliest hospitals in the American colonies. William Birch and his son Thomas made this hand-colored engraving for their series of views of the city, which recorded Philadelphia's streets and public buildings around the turn of the nineteenth century. The print is worth a look for its record of the hospital's appearance and of the city's growth around it.
