Pennsylvania Hospital, on Pine Street, is shown here as one of the plates in William Birch & Son's 1800 series of views of the city. The hospital was founded in 1751 through the efforts of Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Bond, and it ranks among the earliest hospitals in the American colonies. Birch's engravings were meant to record Philadelphia as it looked at the turn of the century, when it was still the young nation's largest city. The hand coloring was added to the engraving, so the building's brick and surroundings reflect the work of the colorist as well as the engraver.
