Pennsylvania Hospital on Pine Street, shown here in a wood engraving from Gleason's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion in July 1854, stands among the oldest institutions of its kind in the United States. Benjamin Franklin and Dr. Thomas Bond founded it in 1751, and its central building, completed in the 1750s, gave Philadelphia a model for public care of the sick and mentally ill. By the 1850s, the illustrated weeklies were regularly printing engravings of such landmarks, so the view also reflects how city institutions were presented to a national readership.
