Unlike the front views of the State House that most collectors know, this engraving looks at the building from behind, showing the side of the structure that faced the rear of the grounds rather than the street. The State House is now Independence Hall, where the Continental Congress met and the Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776, and where delegates drafted the U.S. Constitution in 1787. William Birch and his son Thomas published this view as plate 22 in their 1800 series of Philadelphia city views, which recorded the growing city at the turn of the century. The hand coloring adds period detail, though the sheet shows wear around its edges.
