Taken from the steeple of the State House, the building now known as Independence Hall, this 1850 view looks north over Philadelphia's rooftops. It is a talbotype, an early paper-based photographic process developed by the English inventor William Henry Fox Talbot, and it was printed as a photoprint from the negative. The Langenheim brothers, Philadelphia photographers who helped introduce the process in the United States, made it. Because the image is a high vantage point over a growing city in the decade before the great photographic boom, it is a useful record of the city's streets and buildings at that time.
