Looking out from the upper windows of the State House, the view takes in the rooftops and church spires of colonial Philadelphia, a vantage few artists of the period could claim. The building itself, where the Declaration of Independence was debated and signed in 1776, had by the time of this panorama become a national landmark and was known as Independence Hall. Panoramic views like this one were popular in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, when city dwellers and distant buyers alike wanted to see a growing port laid out in a single sweep. Worth noticing is how the scene pairs the civic seat of the young republic with the working city spreading out below it.
