What sets this view apart is its combination of a long waterfront prospect, a street plan, and separate views of the State House, the building later known as Independence Hall. Prospects like this were popular in the eighteenth century, when a growing port on the Delaware River was eager to see itself laid out on paper, with ships crowding the wharves and the grid of streets William Penn had planned after 1682. The State House, completed in the 1750s, is worth a close look, since the Continental Congress met in its chambers in 1776 and adopted the Declaration of Independence there.
