Drawn from the Jersey shore across the Delaware River, this east prospect shows Philadelphia's waterfront as a line of wharves, shipping, and public buildings seen over open water. George Heap made the view under the direction of Nicholas Scull, Pennsylvania's surveyor general, and the London engraver Thomas Jefferys cut the plate for publication in 1768. A copy also appeared in Jefferys's larger collection of North American maps and views, which helped British readers picture colonial ports on the eve of the imperial crisis that led to the Revolution. Its ships, quays, and fortifications make it a useful record of the city's commercial riverfront just before the war.
