Titled simply after the city, this view takes in Philadelphia as a whole rather than a single landmark. Founded in 1682 by William Penn as a haven for Quakers and other dissenting Christians, the city was laid out on a grid of wide streets between the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers, a plan that still shapes its center. By the late 1700s it was the largest city in British North America, hosting the Continental Congress and later serving as the national capital from 1790 to 1800. Its growth as a manufacturing and port city in the 19th century makes the skyline and street scenes of this era especially worth studying.
