Rather than a single street or building, this piece is the hand-colored title page for a set of city views that the English-born engraver William Birch and his son Thomas issued under the title *The City of Philadelphia... as it appeared in the year 1800*. The page introduces a series of engraved scenes of the city's streets and landmarks. In 1800, Philadelphia was one of the largest cities in the young United States and had served as the national capital until that year, when the federal government moved to Washington. Birch's views record the city at that turning point, and the hand coloring that brightens the title page was added by hand to individual copies.
