Philadelphia's City Hall, the massive granite and marble building that anchors Center Square at the junction of Broad and Market Streets, is the subject here, shown in a view from around 1899. Construction on the building began in 1871 under architect John McArthur Jr. and was not finished until 1901, so this picture captures it during its final decades of construction. The photograph was copyrighted by R. Newell & Son, a firm that produced many views of American cities in this era. The record comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified, so the exact date and vantage point are worth checking against other sources.
