Rising above the intersection of Broad and Market Streets, the tower of Philadelphia's City Hall is the feature this view puts at the center. Architect John McArthur Jr. designed the building, which went up between 1871 and 1901, and its crown is a statue of William Penn, the city's founder, placed on the tower in 1894. The print dates from about 1922, when the building had long been a landmark of downtown, and its copyright line credits Rau Art Studios of Philadelphia.
