Old City Hall at Fifth and Chestnut Streets is the building this print records, and it served as the seat of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1791 to 1800, while Philadelphia was the national capital. The Court heard its cases there until the government moved to Washington, D.C., in 1800, so the building holds an early place in the country's judicial history. This 1922 photograph shows the structure decades after the justices left, when it was valued as a surviving example of the young republic's public architecture. The caption's dates come from an older card and have been revised, so the details are worth checking against other sources.
