The First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry has drilled out of its armory on Market Street since the late 1800s, and the building is a fitting subject for a city gallery because the unit itself grew out of the city's wealthy merchant families. Founded in 1774 as a volunteer mounted company, the Troop has served in wars from the Revolution onward and remains one of the oldest continuously active militia-style units in the country. Its armory, with its castle-like masonry and mounted sentries, reflected the social prestige the Troop enjoyed as much as its military role. Look closely at the architecture to see how the building blends military function with the civic pride of Gilded Age Philadelphia.
