Few street views of early Philadelphia are as directly tied to a single place as this one, which shows High Street with the First Presbyterian Church. The engraving was made by William Birch and Son and issued as Plate 9 in *The City of Philadelphia... as It Appeared in the Year 1800*, a series that recorded the city's streets, public buildings, and churches at the turn of the nineteenth century. Birch, an English-born artist who worked in Philadelphia, was known for these carefully detailed views, which are valued today as a record of how the city looked before rapid growth changed its skyline. The hand coloring adds a sense of the everyday scene, with its brick buildings and busy roadway.
