Christ Church, with its tall steeple, anchors this view looking up Second Street from Market Street in Philadelphia. William Birch & Son issued the hand-colored engraving in 1800 as plate 15 of *The City of Philadelphia... as It Appeared in the Year 1800*, a series meant to record the city's streets and buildings at the turn of the century. Christ Church, built in the 1720s and 1730s, was among the city's most prominent Anglican churches, and Benjamin Franklin is buried in its churchyard. The street scene shows the brick rowhouses and busy commercial life of the early federal city.
