Christ Church in Philadelphia, the Anglican parish founded in the 1690s, is one of the most visited colonial buildings in the city, and this c1899 photograph records it at the turn of the century. The print carries a copyright credit to Edward J. Jones, Jr., of Watertown, Massachusetts, a photographer who made and sold views of American churches and landmarks. Christ Church's Georgian brick tower and steeple, completed in 1744, were already regarded as a model of colonial design, and by the late 1800s the building was drawing attention as a survivor of the city's earliest days. The record itself is thin, so the exact vantage point and date remain unconfirmed.
