Looking north up Second Street from Market Street, this hand-colored engraving places the steeple of Christ Church at the end of the vista, a landmark that remains one of Philadelphia's most recognizable old buildings. The view comes from William Birch and Son's 1800 series of city views, engraved plates that recorded the city's streets at the turn of the nineteenth century. Birch's work was valued for its careful attention to architecture, which makes the scene useful to historians of the period. The church dates to the 1720s and 1730s, so it had already stood for decades when the plate was made.
