The view of Arch Street and the Second Presbyterian Church is a hand-colored engraving by William Birch and Son, published as plate 5 in *The City of Philadelphia... as It Appeared in the Year 1800*. Birch, an English-born engraver who had settled in Philadelphia, made a series of street views that documented the city's buildings and daily life at a time when Philadelphia was still the nation's capital. The year of publication was also the one in which the federal government moved to Washington. The print offers a close look at a major city street and the brick and stone architecture that lined it.
