The Arch Street Ferry sat at the foot of Arch Street on the Delaware River, one of several crossings linking Philadelphia's busy waterfront to the New Jersey shore. William Birch & Son published this hand-colored engraving as Plate 4 in their 1800 series of views of the city, which captured its streets, wharves, and riverfront as they looked at the turn of the century. Birch's engravings are prized today as a record of Philadelphia's appearance in the years when it was the young nation's capital and largest city. Notice the working boats and waterfront activity, which show how central the river was to the city's commerce.
