The Arch Street Friends' Meeting House on Arch Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets was completed in 1804 as a central gathering place for Philadelphia's Quakers. After the Society of Friends split in 1827, it served the Orthodox branch of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. This view survives as one of two nearly identical 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negatives, made around 1908 by the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold large numbers of views of American cities and landmarks in that era. The building's plain lines reflect the Quaker preference for simplicity over ornament.
