Arch Street Friends Meeting House, built in 1804, was a major place of worship for Philadelphia's Quakers, and its plain brick walls and unadorned lines reflect the Friends' preference for simplicity in both worship and architecture. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that photographed American cities, landmarks and scenery between about 1900 and 1910 for postcards and travel publications. Its sharp detail preserves how the building looked in the early twentieth century, a few decades after the Meeting House was constructed.
