The Arch Street Ferry was one of the working crossings on the Delaware River waterfront, carrying travelers and goods between Philadelphia and the New Jersey shore. This hand-colored engraving is plate 4 in *The City of Philadelphia... as It Appeared in the Year 1800*, a series of views made by William Birch & Son, who issued their city scenes as engravings that were often colored by hand. The plate shows the wharves as a busy commercial edge of the port, where ferries, boats, and the people who depended on them gave the city much of its daily life at the turn of the nineteenth century.
