The picture shows the building at 37-39 North Seventh Street in Philadelphia, which housed the first United States Mint. Coins were struck there from 1792 until 1833, when operations moved to a larger facility at Chestnut and Juniper Streets. The photograph dates from sometime between 1880 and 1930, decades after the mint had left, so it records the structure as a later-era street scene rather than an active workplace. It is a useful reminder of how early federal institutions were housed in ordinary city buildings before the government built dedicated facilities.
