Few Philadelphia churches of the period were as visible to passersby as this one on Fourth Street, which the engraving presents as a substantial new building in a busy city. William Birch and his son Thomas issued a set of hand-colored views of Philadelphia in 1800, and this plate is one of them. The city then had a large German-speaking population, and Lutheran congregations were among its established religious communities. The coloring and street-level view also offer a glimpse of how the neighborhood looked at the turn of the nineteenth century.
