Known today as Independence Hall, the building in this print was built in the 1730s as the Pennsylvania State House, home to the colonial assembly. Delegates to the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence in its chamber in July 1776, and the U.S. Constitution was signed there in 1787. The record gives no date for the print and lists an associated name, Eckstein, from a shelflist card whose details are unverified, so the year the image was made is unknown. Its red brick façade and tall bell tower remain among the most recognizable landmarks in the city's historic center.
