This view shows the Chestnut Street theater in Philadelphia, which opened in 1794 and ranked among the first substantial playhouses in the United States. The steel engraving was made by the London firm Fenner, Sears & Co. from a drawing by R. Goodacre, a common method in the period for circulating views of American cities to European and domestic buyers. The card records no date, so the print's exact year is unknown, but the engraving style fits the early nineteenth century. Its street-level composition shows how the theater related to the surrounding city.
