This view shows the Library and Surgeons Hall on Fifth Street, two civic institutions that stood side by side in the city's old center. The Library Company of Philadelphia, founded by Benjamin Franklin and his circle in 1731, was one of the most important subscription libraries in colonial and early national America. William Birch and his son produced this hand-colored engraving as plate 19 of their 1800 series on the city, which recorded Philadelphia's streets and public buildings as the young capital took shape.
