Few sights in the 1800 city series stand out as this one does: a pairing of a library and a surgeons' hall on Fifth Street, two institutions that reflected Philadelphia's reputation for learning and medicine. The Library Company of Philadelphia, founded in 1731 with Benjamin Franklin among its early members, was a leading subscription library in America, and its Fifth Street home drew visitors and scholars. The engraving comes from *The City of Philadelphia... as It Appeared in the Year 1800* by William Birch and Son, a publication that recorded the city's streets and buildings at the turn of the century. Birch, an English-born engraver who had settled in the city in the 1790s, produced these hand-colored views to document a rapidly growing capital.
