The Centennial Exhibition opened in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia on May 10, 1876, to mark a century since the Declaration of Independence, and this wood engraving shows a city street on that opening day. The Illustrated London News printed it in its June 10, 1876 issue, which put the American celebration in front of British readers. Rather than the exhibition halls themselves, the engraving focuses on the street and the activity around it as the city welcomed the crowds.
