Independence Hall, the brick State House where the Declaration of Independence was debated and adopted in 1776, is the building this print shows, and it is the single site that gives Philadelphia its national significance. The photograph dates to about 1906, a period when the hall was already treated as a shrine of the republic. That year fell in the decades when the building was being restored to its colonial appearance, and the tower and steeple that define its skyline were long part of the public image of the city. Because the caption card is unverified, the exact photographer and circumstances remain uncertain, but the view captures a landmark that drew visitors from across the country.
