College Hall, the building that anchored the University of Pennsylvania's campus in West Philadelphia for much of its history, is the focus of this glass-plate negative made between 1900 and 1910. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that photographed American cities, resorts and landmarks for postcards and illustrated books during those years. The company's large 8 by 10 inch glass negatives captured fine architectural detail, and this view shows the stone Gothic Revival hall as the university's administrators and visitors of the period would have known it. Its survival as a glass negative is itself worth noting, since such plates were fragile and many were lost over time.
