Houston Hall, the student union at the University of Pennsylvania, stands out as one of the earliest buildings of its kind in the United States, serving as a gathering place for students well beyond the classroom. This glass plate negative, catalogued as dating between 1900 and 1910, was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed landmarks, streets and campuses across the country for sale as views and postcards. Campus scenes from this period show how American colleges were beginning to build dedicated spaces for student social life, and the image records the building as it looked during those years.
