The gateway at the Laurel Hill Cemetery entrance in Philadelphia marks the edge of one of the country's first rural cemeteries, laid out in 1836 on bluffs above the Schuylkill River. Its winding paths and landscaped grounds were meant to give visitors a park-like place for quiet reflection, a departure from crowded urban churchyards. This negative came from the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced large numbers of views of American towns and landmarks in the early 1900s. The date of about 1905 is an estimate drawn from the company's 1906 catalog.
