Green Hill was the country seat of Samuel Meredith, a Philadelphia merchant and Revolutionary War officer who later served as the first Treasurer of the United States. This etching, drawn by J. Hoffman and engraved by S. Hill, ran as the frontispiece of the October 1792 issue of *The Massachusetts Magazine*, so it reached readers far from Pennsylvania. Its appearance in a Boston periodical reflects the late-eighteenth-century taste for showing prominent citizens' estates in engraved views. The piece is a useful record of how a gentleman's house and grounds were presented to the public in the years after independence.
