This engraving shows gray's Ferry from the east, a crossing of the Schuylkill River on the southwestern edge of Philadelphia. The record dates it to April 20, 1789, but that date comes from an older caption card and has not been independently verified. The print was used as an illustration in the Columbian Magazine, a Philadelphia monthly that ran from 1786 to 1792 and published views, essays and news for readers in the city and beyond. Such views offer a useful glimpse of a river crossing and its surroundings in the years just after the Revolution.
